It wrede foarjier
I was fascinated by the story of Tie mostly because many of his experience resonate with me as our family experienced the war in our own way in Sneek. I can certainly identify with some of the issues raised by tie with respect to faith and religious issues since most of our generation experienced similar changes in our perspective on depending and trusting fully in God i.e. most of us carry life insurance. Tie dealings with his secret emotions regarding Maria certainly resonate.
The story was spell-binding in many ways and I had a hard time putting it away. Yet at times I was tempted to skim over and scan the more elaborate psychological reflections which at times I found almost somewhat tedious. It didn't help that my Frisian was lacking in some spots where expression and words were at times unfamiliar to me.
I was much surprised to read my Father's name, Bergsma' at the end of chapter 5 as I have vivid recollections of helping Dad packaging tobacco which was shipped all over Friesland. Having tobacco in the house at that time also was the cause of my having started to smoke at age 9 ( 1944). I'd love to know where my Father's name came from and why it was actually used in the story.
